At the ski resort near my Colorado home, a disoriented moose wandered to the top level of a parking garage where, panicked and surrounded by tourists with phone cameras, it leapt from the parking garage to its death. That moment became the catalyst for Animal Friends, a series of elegiac portraits exploring the fascination and cruelty intertwined in our relationship with nature. Photographs of taxidermied animals, paired with repurposed tent fabric and friendship bracelets, reflect the human impulse to preserve and immerse ourselves in the wild while accepting violence through the process. Approached as shrouds or funerary objects, these works honor the animals with laborious care while confronting the tensions between awe and domination, intimacy and control in our relationship with the natural world.
